Between 250 and 300 people from the area showed up for pork steaks and the music of the 399th Army Band, the "Dixie Dawgs," at the annual AUSA picnic on Friday, June 1 in Rolla. The Phelps County Ambassadors and Phelps for the Fort organized the event.
Also on hand were 21 representatives of the International Student Detachment, guests of the Phelps for the Fort group again this year. Picnic organizers kept one eye on the sky as thunderstorms danced around, but the weather held off until the activities were over. BG Tom Spoehr, BG David Quantock, COL Dan Grey, COL John Megnia and CSM Mike Hayes were on hand with their wives to represent command group. Rolla Mayor Bill Jenks held an open house for them in the recently completed city hall prior to the picnic, and the mayors from St.James, Doolittle and Newburg also attended.
The picnic kicked off the annual Rolla Summerfest celebration and the Phelps County Sesquicentennial events. Combining the AUSA with Summerfest and moving it downtown has given both the military and the civilian communities another great opportunity to interact.
